The details are: from Triune, Hwy 41 ( Horton Hwy)  through Shelbyville, Tullahoma andManchester to just south of Manchester connecting with TN 16 and to AL 79 toScottsboro and  Ft Payne, approx.150 miles. Hwy 16 is short but interesting. The park is well worth the visit ifonly to see the big falls at the park entrance. The loop around the park is achallenge and takes about 1 hour assuming you don’t make too many stops for theoverlooks. Not much in Ft Payne proper. The short way back is to pick up I 59north to I 24 and return.  Forthose who want to stay overnight, there are hotels at the Ft Payne area.

TheDesoto state park has cabins as well as more traditional rooms. We stoppedthere as well and it looked to be a nice facility with rooms, cabins and a restaurant.The cabins are about $80.00 a night.

 

Weshould be to Ft Payne by noon. Ruby Tuesdays or Cracker Barrel at the I 59 Ft Payne exit for lunch,depending on the wishes of the group. For any who traveled another route, this would be a good place to meetup.  For those who stay overnightthere is the art community at nearby Mentone and the Desoto park as well. Ifyou have the time, a short detour through the small community of Valley Head isworth while.

Wecame back I 59 to I 24 and exited at Mount Eagle, had dinner at the Smoke Houseand returned through Sewanee and 41a again, a nice set of switchbacks just westof Sewanee. Our trip was 325 miles. Very pleasant day trip.
